Current Local Efforts:
** Energy efficiency rebates for residents and businesses through the Governor's Energy Office Recharge Colorado Campaign

**Small Business Efficiency Program: On June 15, 2010, Westminster launched the Small Business Efficiency Program offering up to $5,200 in energy efficiency rebates to small- and medium-sized businesses.

**Green Guide : How to be green when living, visiting or doing business in Westminster.

**Photovoltaic solar power purchase agreement pilot program with Main StreetPower to use City facilities as hosts for its photovoltaic solar systems.

On January 5, 2009, the City's Green Team provided recommendations to City Council.  The Team's recommendations support the City Council's Strategic Plan Goal of being a Beautiful and Environmentally Sensitive City that has energy efficient, environmentally sensitive City operations. While not an all encompassing list, the breadth of ways in which Westminster is green is astounding.  Supporting a sustainable community is a priority for the City of Westminster.

What is "Green Matters"?  Westminster's Green Team has begun a deliberate education campaign under the "Green Matters" logo to help identify quickly environmental issues in which website visitors might be interested.

Sustainability is defined as meeting current needs without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs by balancing environmental, economic and social concerns. The quality of life in Westminster is joined to the health and well-being of our community and our environment.

The city’s sustainability efforts serve as a means to inspire critical thinking about our priorities and the impacts of our behaviors. All of us - residents, businesses and government - can take simple actions every day that will make Westminster better today and create a positive legacy for future generations.

In addition to local efforts, Westminster has signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, Westminster has committed to:

  • A. Urge the federal government and state governments to enact policies and programs to meet or beat the target of reducing global warming pollution levels to 7 percent below 1990 levels by 2012, including efforts to: reduce the United States’ dependence on fossil fuels and accelerate the development of clean, economical energy resources and fuel-efficient technologies such as methane recovery for energy generation, waste to energy, wind and solar energy, fuel cells, efficient motor vehicles, biofuels and through conservation efforts;
  • B. Urge the U.S. Congress to pass bipartisan greenhouse gas reduction legislation that includes 1) clear timetables and emissions limits and 2) a flexible, market-based system of tradable allowances among emitting industries; and
  • C. Strive to meet or exceed Kyoto Protocol targets for reducing global warming pollution by taking actions in our own operations and communities.

As an internationally recognized environmental steward, Westminster knows that its efforts locally will impact the global community.
